Guide to Playing Tennis in New York City: Local tennis expert’s ways to play and learn.

Tennis is a sport that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and skill levels. New York City is home to one of the biggest tennis events in the world, the US Open and there is almost no better place for outdoor tennis. In this guide I will be listing courts and tennis classes in different boroughs (Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx & Manhattan) to help you find the perfect place to play.

What’s tennis like in New York City?

. New York City tennis is a gritty, colorful and  an inclusive playing experience on a wide range of courts located throughout the city. Whether you’re a seasoned player or just starting out, there’s a court and class that’s convenient for you. From public parks to private clubs, your options can match your budget as well as playing ability. Like most things in NYC, there is a cost and for almost all public park tennis courts; to play you will need a NYC tennis Permit ($100/adult, $25/child)and if you are just visiting there are single play tickets($15) good for 2 hours tennis (1)day of use.

Tennis Lessons

Getting tennis lessons with a qualified Teaching Professional is a great way to get the personalization and attention you need. They can be taken as a Private (1:1 Player:Coach) or Semi-Private, great for couples or friends (2:1). Taking lessons are great outdoors since they are a lot less expensive and a great opportunity to learn or advanced your tennis skills; after all how else will you get to play in the US Open

Group classes are a great way to connect with people and engage with similar skilled players. Group classes are often 4-5 players and a coach, with an average $35/hr rate. Classes are often classified by skill level from Beginner- Advanced and  themes like Cardio Tennis. Tennis classes are grouped into kids tennis classes (4-17yrs); Adult tennis classes (18+). Classes are usually at least an hour long, but may run longer based on advanced skill level, but either way it’s a great way to learn and connect with other people.
